Project 1 is about doing research of cycling condition in Winchester and how to encourage people to use bicycles.The design process is iterative.

    Friendly, Smart
    He doesn't ride a bicycle because he lives in Winchester and thinks that Winchester is a small city, so it's very convenient wherever you go. Usually he travels by walking, so he can enjoy             views of the city.

2. John, about 55 years old, retired, Regular cyclist
    Gentle, Love sport
    He rides the bicycle every day and has been riding for 30 years. He believes that cycling makes him happy and it is one of the ways to keep healthy. During the cycling, he can stop and have a rest at any time, while enjoying views along the road. In addition, he worried about damage of the bicycle, he has replaced several bicycles.

3. Father:  Owen, about 30 years old, doctors, In-frequent cyclist  
    Daughter:  Emily, student, Regular cyclist
    His daughter rides the bicycle to school every day, and this bicycle has always been her favorite toy. He goes to school every day to pick up his daughter. He sometimes rides a bicycle, usually he chooses to walk. He thinks that can accompany with daughter and take care of her safety.

1.  Family : Parents don't use bicycles for commuting because they are busy on career.
2. Convenience : Tourists visit the city's views because Winchester is a fascinating place.
3. Safety : Sometimes cycling is dangerous and there are not enough protective measures.

1.  Family : Parents need time to accompany their children for cycling because family activities can strengthen family ties.
2. Convenience : Tourists exploring Winchester need to rent bicycles because they can enjoy beautiful views around the city.
3. Safety : People need more protection when riding a bicycle because there are no enough bicycle lanes and bicycle signal lights.

In conclution

Based on the research we found potential design opportunities, which I am most interested in the family's insight, because if the design can bring them happiness and enjoyment, it makes sense to me. So, I decided to consider about how to get more family members to use the bicycle together.

How might we design a bicycle activity to encourage parents spending more time to accompany with their children?

After discussion, I thought that we could hold a bicycle family event in Winchester and invite local families to participate in the event, in order to encourage parents to accompany with children. The event have many bicycle fun games that parents and children are required to complete tasks together.


Schedule of the event

Time: weekend
Group: family
Tool: bicycle
Task: Send 6 photos to each group of families. These photos are different views of the city in Winchester. Each group of families needs to go to the place in the photo by bike, and take a family selfie in the same position. After taking 6 photos and posting them to social software, the family who completed the task can get a gift.

Based on the activity, parents and children experience and share happiness while exploring the Winchester. In addition, it shows that cycling is an eco-friendly and healthy lifestyle.
