BRIEF 1

Creative Conscience

Topic : Equality

The Creative Conscience is a design competition, which identify a way forward in creating an engaging project that maps against your own interest as a creative practitioner. The given topic assigned to me is equality, the challenge is can you think of a way to change current behaviours and inspire people to understand the value brought by treating everyone equally.

Research on Internet

I have found some information about equality from the Internet. Equality means that social subjects are in the same position in social relations and social life, have the same development opportunities, and enjoy the same rights. And it has six definitions, 1.Simple Equality, 2.Equality of Welfare, 3.Equality of Resources, 4.Equality and Responsibility, 5.Equality of Opportunity, 6.Capabilities Approaches.
In addition, I found that the creative conscience competition also gave six themes, so I used the brainstorming method to record the associated specific phenomenon in the sketchbook. Finally, I chose to start from school bullying and find the areas of interest to me.

Exploration Process

According to the bullying phenomenon in the school, I found that it brought great harm to students, especially the mental damage. Therefore, I think the main reason is words hurt, because physical damage is easy to heal, but mental damage is hard to disappear. So who is the most vulnerable to mental damage? I think is disabled, because physical defects make them more sensitive and more vulnerable to unequal treatment, even if average persons provide them with many conveniences. Meanwhile, I have some questions, who cares about injured or disabled animals? Do humans need to treat animals equally?

Secondary Research & PACT

By the second research, I learned about the Supervet's protection of animals, and confirmed the contents of PACT.
People: human beings.
Activities: treat injured or weak animals equally.
Contexts: make us better we can be.
Technologies: concept strategies, static printed work, illustrations.

Speculative Design Method

Speculative Design is a way to manifest possibilities, to facilitate a more desirable, responsible path into the future. I use this design method that assuming the social status of humans and animals are reversed, how will animals treat humans?

Sketch Concept

I thought about the inequality situation of animals, which selected three kinds of animals to carry out in-depth design, and try to spread the idea of equal treatment.

After Crit

After discussion with tutors, I have gained some valuable suggestions, especially to figure out what scene to use. Finally, I plan to design the ideas into the form of cards, and then put them into the school. Under the guidance of teachers or parents, let the students from primary and secondary school realize the concept that life is equal.

Mockup

I made some card samples.

Display

Accompanied by their parents, I showed the works to children.

Gain

I have learned how to make movement illustrations and tried to use the approach of speculative design to guide my work.
